My baby needs me to further my education

Skyla's Mom started this conversation
My name is Mindy and I have recently had my first child, a beautiful baby girl.  For the past nine  years after high school, while I've attempted to make a place for myself in this world, I have been waiting tables at a number of different restaurants.  I attended the University of North Texas for six semesters and couldn't make the grades because I worked close to full time and couldn't devote enough time for studies.  Now I find myself twenty-seven years old, with a two-month old, and I have no marketable skills other than serving food, shift-to-shift at yet another restaurant.  I have currently been employed by the same company for three years and while they work with my new mommy schedule, I really have always wanted to be a hairstylist!  I believe that I have a talent for cosmetology but specific training and liscensing is required to practice and that costs money.   I moved to Austin, TX in order to attend  one of the Cosmetology schools here but haven't yet been able to pay tuition and still afford the cost of living and have the time to work the hours I need in order to keep my daughters and my  health  insurance.  I have come to the conclusion that I have to find some assistance, because being intelligent, hard-working, and  a decent human being really doesn't get you anywhere these days.  I am asking for help for the sake of my little girl and her future.

I can readily understand you situation. I went through the same experiences when i had my daughter. Only things were a little different back then, and life was very hard.

What exactly are you needing right now?

Mindy I can sympathize with you on being a single mother who is intelligent and wants to make a life for your daughters.  I am a single mother and have been since my daughter was 3 years old.  I have always had ambition to go to school get my Bachelors and then pursue my Masters.  Well, I am 34 years old now, still don't have my Bachelors.  However, I have fought my way up the ladder.  I worked minimum wage jobs over the years and then with the skills that I developed I was able to get where I am at now. In between the full time jobs, I also attended school full time, but reduced my hours to part time because I needed to provide financially for my daughter and I.  Then I had to stop going to school because the time away from home was stressing on my daughter.  So I opted for online courses.  I know that maybe Cosmotology might not be offered online, but you could start somewhere and work yourself there.  Maybe getting a certificate in something could get you a job with better hours and you can then go back to school for what you really want.  I'm doing it and I know you could too.  I have 9 classes to go and I will be done with my Bachelors.  It's difficult, but I will be smiling that I actually finished.  I will have gotten what I wanted to personally achieve.
